This is a tutorial that will show you how to install the Mercedes Benz G-Class LED Taillights (72-021) for the W463 G500, G550, G55, and G63. Prior to installing the Mercedes G-Class LED turn signal tail light assembly, make sure your G-Class SUV is completely shut off, including the engine and the electronics. Otherwise your Mercedes' onboard computer will detect that you disconnected the OEM tail lamp, and an error message will pop up on the dashboard.
Step 1: Unscrew the two bolts to remove your stock tail light assembly.
Step 2: Use the included tags to label the wire according to their function. Refer to the images below to help you correctly label each wire.
Follow this step as precisely as you can because mixing up the wires is very easy.
On a G-Class test fit we performed, the driver side ground/negative wire and the brake light wire were both white.
*If you do not label your stock wires, you may end up trying up to 24 different wiring combinations before you get it right. Tapping the wires incorrectly may result in partial light up, popping fuses, or triggering an error message on your dashboard.*
We have learned the wiring process the hard way so you don’t have to!
Step 3: Once you have labeled your wires, unplug them from your factory tail light assembly.
Remove the stock plastic tail light bracket.
Step 4: Bolt on the included LED tail light assembly mounting brackets.
Use the inner holes on the left side bracket and the outer holes on the right side bracket.
Step 5: Unplug the green/black wire of the load resistor on the LED tail light assembly. Failure to do so will cause a dashboard error warning.
Step 6: Take out the rubber seal from your stock tail light assembly and apply it onto the LED tail light assembly.
A piece of the rubber will cover the screw hole. The screw will push the piece of rubber outwards and will not affect the fitment, but you may cut a hole open if you wish.
Step 7: Connect the wires before you secure the LED taillight assembly.
If for some reason the tail light (dimming mode) is not functioning properly, try the following troubleshooting steps:
Completely shut off your G-Class SUV and lock it for 5 seconds
Flip to the back side of the LED tail lamp
Unplug the green/black wire plug from the built-on resistor
Unlock your Mercedes, turn on the engine and try again
Step 8: Use electrical tape to secure the connections and the included zip ties to collect the wires together. At this point, you may test the G-Class LED tail light assembly to ensure it lights up properly.
Step 9: Place the Mercedes LED tail light assembly over the mounting brackets and apply the included longer screws to secure it. Repeat these steps on the other side.
